Cute as a Button Flatware Holder
I wanted to whip up an easy flatware holder in time for the holidays that can be used with my “Cute-As-A-Button” button-on appliqués. You can use this flatware holder throughout the year to display the interchangeable seasonal button-on appliqués. You can attach one button or several to the holder depending on the colors you prefer to use with your chosen appliqués. Make as many flatware holders as you need for each place setting at your table. You can alternate the colors of your flatware holders, use different button-on appliqués on each of the holders, or keep them all the same, depending on your design style. The possibilities are endless! I just like the idea of being able to use the main flatware holder all year, while only needing to change the appliqués to fit the season. Of course, you don’t have to use my button-on appliqués with the flatware holder. If you don’t wish to use the appliqués but still want to make the flatware holder, just follow the directions, but don’t add any buttons at the end. If you are interested in making the flatware holder, see below for my pattern.
Flatware Holder
This flatware holder pattern is written to fit three to four pieces of most standard-size flatware.

PATTERN NOTES
- The flatware holder is made in rows of single crochet stitches. It is then folded up and sewn on each side to create a pocket for the flatware.
DIRECTIONS
Body of Flatware Holder
*Use your 5.00 mm hook and main color worsted weight yarn.
*Leave a long tail on the beginning slipknot to use when sewing the edge of the pocket during ASSEMBLY.
*HELPFUL HINT: Mark the 54th row with a stitch marker so you know where to fold the bottom up to later.
Row 1: Ch 23, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 21 chs across. (22 sc)
Rows 2-74: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (22 sc)
Row 75: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across, fasten off and weave in loose ends. (22 sc)
ASSEMBLY
*You will now create the pocket that holds the flatware by folding the bottom edge up and sewing the two sides of the pocket together.
- Fold the bottom edge up (Row 1 is the bottom edge) so it is between Row 53 and 54 and so the corresponding stitches from each row align (the 1st through the 22nd stitches of Row 1 should match up with the 1st through 22nd stitches of Rows 53 and 54).
- Use a tapestry needle and a strand of yarn in the main color to sew/whipstitch one side of the pocket closed. Make sure to secure the yarn on the inside of the pocket when finished. Do the same thing for the other side. If you left a long tail on your beginning slipknot of Row 1, you can use that to sew the left side of the pocket together instead of using a separate piece of yarn for that side.
***Once the sides of the pocket are sewn shut and all loose ends are secured and tied off, the Flatware Holder is complete. If you choose to add a button (or more than one button) to make it compatible with my Cute-As-A-Button button-on appliqués, follow the directions below to attach your button(s).
Attaching the Button(s)
Attach your ½-inch button(s) to the front of the pocket of the flatware holder on the outside using matching thread or lace (0) weight yarn and a sewing needle or thin tapestry needle. Make sure to only sew through the front (top layer) of the pocket so the pocket stays open. Secure your thread on the inside of the pocket. If you are sewing on more than one button so you have different colors, make sure to sew them close enough together so the button-on appliqué will cover the other buttons when it is attached to its own color button. I attached a brown and a black button to the front of my pocket. I attached the brown button so that it was centered and in between the 15th and 16th rows when counting down rows from the top of the pocket. I attached the black button directly above the brown button in between the 12th and 13th rows when counting down from the top of the pocket.
***Once you have attached your button(s), you are ready to decorate your flatware holder with a Cute-As-A-Button button-on appliqué! Make several more to decorate each place setting at your table.
