DIRECTIONS

Center of Sunflower

*Use your 3.00 mm hook and brown worsted weight yarn.

*The sunflower’s brown center is worked in continuous rounds (Rounds 1-3). Work first stitch of round in first stitch of previous round. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning/end of each round, if needed.

*In Round 1, make sure to work your single crochet stitches in the chain stitches and not in the ring.

Round 1: Ch 8, slst in first ch to form a ring, work 2 sc in each ch around. (16 sc)

Round 2: Repeat [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around. (24 sc)

Round 3: Repeat [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (32 sc)

***Do not fasten off yarn. Follow directions below to make the petals of the sunflower in Round 4.

Golden Yellow Petals of Sunflower

*The golden yellow petals are worked first in Round 4 (Part 1). Pick up where you left off in Round 3 to begin Round 4.

*The petals are worked in the back loop only of the odd stitches from Round 3 (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.). Every other stitch is skipped (the even stitches are skipped from Round 3).

Round 4 (Part 1): Insert hook in back loop only of first st of Round 3 to begin a slst, pull through golden yellow yarn to complete slst, ch 8, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in last 2 chs, slst in back loop only of 3rd st of Round 3 (first golden yellow petal made), repeat [ch 8, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in last 2 chs, slst in back loop only of next odd st of Round 3] around, (on completion of last petal, slst in back loop only of first st of Round 3), fasten off and weave in loose ends. (16 golden yellow petals)

***You should now have 16 golden yellow petals made. Follow the directions below to make the bright yellow petals in Round 4 (Part 2).

Bright Yellow Petals of Sunflower

*The bright yellow petals are made last in Round 4 (Part 2).

*The petals are worked in the back loop only of the even stitches from Round 3 (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.). Every other stitch is skipped (the odd stitches from Round 3).

*Attach bright yellow yarn to the back loop only of the second stitch of Round 3. Make sure to attach the yarn from behind the first golden yellow petal made in Round 4 (Part 1).

Round 4 (Part 2): From behind the first golden yellow petal, attach bright yellow yarn to the back loop only of second st of Round 3 (the first st you skipped when working the golden yellow petals), ch 8, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in last 2 chs, slst in back loop only of 4th st of Round 3 from the front side of the second golden yellow petal (first bright yellow petal made), slst in back loop only of 6th st of Round 3 from behind the third golden yellow petal, repeat [ch 8, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in last 2 chs, slst in back loop only of next even st of Round 3 from the front side of next golden yellow petal, slst in back loop only of next even st of Round 3 from behind the next golden yellow petal] around, (on completion of last petal, slst in back loop only of second st of Round 3), fasten off and weave in loose ends. (8 bright yellow petals)

***Once you finish weaving in all loose ends, your sunflower button-on appliqué is ready to be placed on a ½-inch black or brown button!

TIP: Press the appliqué with an iron using a press cloth for protection to help it lay flat and keep its shape.
