Reindeer Button-On Appliqué

Leading my pack of Christmas/winter button-on appliqués, with a shiny button nose, is this happy reindeer! Attach it to your next project with a ½-inch button to add some winter cheer!   

Reindeer Button-On Appliqué

This reindeer button-on appliqué pattern is written fit a standard ½-inch red or black button.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

The reindeer button-on appliqué is about 3½ inches tall and 2½ inches wide (diameter).

MATERIALS

– Size 3.00 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

– Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn in Light Brown (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Soft Taupe.)

– Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn in Dark Brown (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Chocolate.)

– Worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn in Black (I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Black.)

– Scissors

– Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

– Stitch markers

– Measuring tape

ABBREVIATIONS

– ch = chain

– chs = chains

– sc = single crochet

– sc2tog = single crochet 2 together (single crochet decrease)

– slst = slip stitch

– sp = space

– st = stitch

– sts = stitches

GAUGE

3 rounds of sc (diameter) = 1 inch

6 sc = 1 inch

PATTERN NOTES

  • The reindeer button-on appliqué is made in continuous rounds of single crochet stitches. Simply work the first stitch of each round in the first stitch of the previous round (do not join rounds). Use a stitch marker to help keep track of rounds.
  • Brackets [ ] indicate portions of the pattern to be repeated.

DIRECTIONS

Head of Reindeer

*Use your 3.00 mm hook and light brown worsted weight yarn to complete the head of the reindeer.

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, work 6 sc in the ring, pull ring closed. (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Round 3: Repeat [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around. (18 sc)

Round 4: Repeat [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (24 sc)

Round 5: Repeat [sc in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] around. (30 sc)

Round 6: Repeat [sc in first 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. (34 sc, 2 chs; 36 total sts)

*As you work Round 7, mark the 38th and 41st stitches of the round to help with ear and antler placement.

Round 7: Repeat [sc in first 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. (42 sc)

*Round 8 begins the left ear. Leave yarn on hook after Round 7 and continue to work Round 8. Mark 4th stitch of Round 8 to help with antler placement.

Round 8: Sc in first 7 sts. (7 sc)

*Leave yarn on hook after Round 8 and follow the pattern for the left ear below.

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st. (3 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sc2tog. (1 sc, 1 sc2tog; 2 total sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, fasten off and weave in ends on back of work. (1 sc2tog)

*The left ear is now complete. Follow the directions below to work the right ear.

Right Ear

*Use your light brown yarn to make the right ear.

Attach yarn to the 38th stitch of Round 7 (this would be 10 stitches over from the right of the left ear).

Row 1: After attaching yarn to 38th st of Round 7, ch 1, turn, sc in same st, 2 sc in next st. (3 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sc2tog. (1 sc, 1 sc2tog; 2 total sts)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, fasten off and weave in ends on back of work. (1 sc2tog)

*The right ear is now complete. Follow the directions below to work the left antler.

Left Antler

*Use your dark brown yarn to make the left antler.

Attach yarn to the 4th stitch of Round 8 (this would be 2 stitches over from the right of the left ear) and follow the directions below to make the left antler.

After attaching dark brown yarn to 4th st of Round 8, ch 3, slst in 2nd ch from hook, ch 4, slst in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 chs, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs, ch 2, fasten off and weave in ends on back of work.

*The left antler is now complete. Follow the directions below to work the right antler.

Right Antler

*Use your dark brown yarn to make the right antler.

Turn work over to the back side and attach yarn to the 41st stitch of Round 7 (this would be the 5th stitch over from the left antler) and follow the directions below to make the right antler. The right antler follows the same pattern as the left antler (the only difference is you attach your yarn on the back side of the work and not the front side).

After attaching dark brown yarn to 41st st of Round 7 on the back side of the work, ch 3, slst in 2nd ch from hook, ch 4, slst in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 chs, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs, ch 2, fasten off and weave in ends on back of work.

*The right antler is now complete. Follow the directions below to make the eyes.

Eyes

*Use your black yarn and your tapestry needle to make the eyes.

Use your tapestry needle to stitch on each eye using two stitches to create an upside down V shape. Make sure to center them with the button hole since that is the location of the nose. Once you are satisfied with the eyes, secure your yarn on the back of the work. ***I placed my eyes over Rounds 2, 3, and 4 of the head. I made the point at the top of each eye between Rounds 4 and 5 of the head (about even with the 9th and 36th stitches of Round 7. I tried to tilt the eyes slightly so the top of the eyes point outwards.   

***Once you finish weaving in all loose ends, your reindeer button-on appliqué is ready to be placed on a ½-inch red or black button!
