Cute As A Button Baby Headband and Hat

My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first baby this October. My sister-in-law had her baby shower last month and I wanted to crochet something for the baby. Since it is a baby girl, I thought a headband would be cute. When I was trying to decide what to put on the headband, I thought it would be cool to create a headband that had options so it can be changed to match different outfits or even be worn in different seasons. I then came up with what I am calling my “Cute-As-A-Button Interchangeable Crochet Button-On Appliqués”. Each one can be attached to pretty much anything with a ½-inch button as an extra fun embellishment.

I got a little too ambitious with my niece’s headband and made a lot of Halloween and fall-specific button-on appliqués since the little one will be born during that time. I thought making separate Halloween and fall headbands would be best since I made more button-on appliqués than I had originally anticipated.

Of course, I also had to make a headband with the button-on appliqués for my own baby girl since I love this project so much! I made a hat so baby boys can wear these as well as baby girls.

Since the interchangeable button-on appliqués seem to have endless possibilities, I plan to continue creating many more of them and introducing them to you all as I do that. I am releasing my Halloween button-on appliqués, first, followed by my fall line.

In this post, I am providing the patterns for the 0-3 month headband and the 3-6 month hat. Additionally, I will provide the links to the candy corn button-on, jack-o’-lantern button-on, and the monster head button-on patterns. Stay tuned for the release of my next Halloween button-on appliqué.

**Be sure to follow me on Facebook, where I will be posting as the button-on appliqués are released!!**

– Worsted weight (4) yarn in your main color choice (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Amethyst for headband shown.)

3 rows/rounds of hdc = 1 inch

DIRECTIONS

0-3 MONTH HEADBAND

*Use your 5.00 hook and worsted weight yarn in your color choice.

*The headband is made in joined rounds of half double crochet stitches. Place the first stitch of each round in the same stitch as the beginning ch-1 (first stitch of previous round).

Round 1: Ch 57, slst in first ch to make a ring, ch 1, hdc in each ch around, slst in first sc of round. (57 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, slst in first sc, fasten off, weave in loose ends. (57 hdc)

*If you are making this headband to wear with the button-on appliqués, sew a ½-inch button in your color choice to the headband so the button in on the outside. 5 rows/rounds of dc = 2 inches

DIRECTIONS

3-6 MONTH HAT

*Use your 5.00 hook and worsted weight yarn in your color choice.

*The hat is made in joined rounds of double crochet stitches. Work first stitch of each round in same stitch as join/ch-2 was made (the ch-2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch).

*Rounds increase by 9 until the correct crown diameter is reached for an average 3-6 month-old head. If you need to adjust this hat for a larger or smaller head, add or subtract increase rounds until you reach the correct crown diameter. If you need the hat to be longer or shorter, add or subtract rounds.

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 2, work 9 dc in ring, pull ring closed, slst in first dc of round. (9 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, slst in first dc of round. (18 dc)

Round 3: Ch 2, repeat [dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] around, slst in first dc of round. (27 dc)

Round 4: Ch 2, repeat [dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, slst in first dc of round. (36 dc)

Round 5: Ch 2, repeat [dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, slst in first dc of round. (45 dc)

Round 6: Ch 2, repeat [dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, slst in first dc of round. (54 dc)

Rounds 7-16: Ch 2, dc in each st around, slst in first dc of round. (54 dc)

*The last 4 rounds will be flipped up to make the brim of the hat. Make sure to turn work and work the opposite way around in Round 17. Continue working in that direction for the remaining rounds.

Round 17: Ch 2, turn, dc in each st around, slst in first dc of round. (54 dc)

Rounds 18-20: Ch 2, dc in each st around, slst in first dc of round, at the end of Round 20, fasten off and weave in ends. (54 dc)

*Once you weave in the loose ends, flip up the last 4 rounds on the outside of the hat to make the brim.

*If you are making this hat to wear with the button-on appliqués, sew a ½-inch button in your color choice to the brim of the hat so the button faces the outside. You can sew on more than one button if you need multiple colors. Sew them close enough together so the button-on appliqué will cover the other buttons when it is attached to its own color button.
