Edging of Football
After completing the sc2tog of Row 19 of the body of the football, sc evenly around the football to give it a finished/polished appearance. You should work about 1 sc stitch per row of the football and work 2 sc stitches in each of the pointed ends. Once you reach back around to where you started, slst to the first stitch you worked in the edging, fasten off and weave in the ends on the back of the work.
***Once you are finished weaving in the loose ends, follow the directions below to add the laces to the football.
Laces of Football
*Use your 3.00 mm hook and white yarn.
Long Lace: Ch 8, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing onto the football.
*The back of the chain (the side with the back ridges) is actually going to be the front of the long lace. Make sure this back side faces up when you sew it onto the football.
Sewing Laces on Football
- Hold the football so the front side is facing you and one of the long sides is at the top. Position the long lace centered above the button hole, so that it runs parallel right under the long side at the top (I placed mine right under the edging stitches). It should run from the Row 7 to Row 14 of the body of the football. Make sure the back of the chain (the side with the back ridges) faces up because this is the side you want showing. Use your tapestry needle and the long tail you left on the chain to sew it in place. I sewed mine over the back ridges of the chain. Once you are satisfied with the positioning of the long lace on the football, secure your yarn on the back of the work.
- Use your tapestry needle and a strand of white yarn to create the 8 short laces that run across the long lace. Each short lace is one short stitch. The first lace should be at the end of the long lace. Each lace should be placed about a row apart so there is one short lace per row from from Row 7 to Row 14 of the body of the football. Once you have all 8 laces in place and are satisfied with how they look, secure and weave in your yarn on the back of the work.
Stripes of Football (Make 2)
*Use your 3.00 mm hook and white yarn.
Stripe: Ch 8, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing onto the football.
*The back of the chain (the side with the back ridges) is actually going to be the front of the stripe. Make sure this back side faces up when you sew it onto the football.
Sewing Laces on Football
- Hold the football so the front side is facing you. Position the stripes about 2 rows in from each end of the football, so they curve slightly inward. Make sure the back of the chains (the side with the back ridges) face up. Use your tapestry needle and the long tails you left on each chain to sew them in place. I sewed mine over the back ridges of the chains. Once you are satisfied with the positioning of each stripe on the football, secure your yarn on the back of the work.
***Once you finish weaving in all loose ends, your football button-on appliqué is ready to be placed on a ½-inch brown button.
TIP: Press the appliqué with an iron using a press cloth for protection to help it lay flat and keep its shape.
