Scarecrow, Ghost & Pumpkin Baby Food Jar Candle

These baby food jar candles are a fun Halloween craft that are pretty simple to make.  They look really cute in the dark or in the light!

I kept coming up with Halloween craft ideas using baby food jars after making the Halloween Candy Dishes out of baby food jars with my daughter.  I wanted to make Halloween candles from the jars but I didn’t want to be able to see the candle through the glass.  Below are the directions for making these cute candles that you can use to display as Halloween decorations around your house.  The method I came up with keeps the candle from being seen so all you see is the image when the jar is lit.

Scarecrow, Pumpkin, Ghost, Candle, Baby food jar

Scarecrow Jar Candle

ScareCrow, Candle, Baby Food Jar, Scarecrow Candle

Materials:

– Clean Baby food jar (or another type of glass jar)

– Cream-colored cardstock

– Vellum (this is sheer paper that can be found in the scrapbook paper section at Michaels)

– Small hole punch

– Scissors

– Battery-operated candle

Directions:

1.  Cut a rectangle strip out of the cardstock that will fit inside the jar when curled around itself.  My strip measured 6 inches by 1-7/8 inches.

2.  In the middle of the rectangle strip you cut, make a scarecrow’s face by cutting a triangle-shaped nose out of the center and using a small hole punch to punch out two eyes and a mouth.  See the picture below.  Using a pencil, I drew the nose and a line to form the smile before punching it out.  I used the opposite side of the rectangle strip as the outside so the pencil lines can’t be seen.

3.  Cut the same size rectangle strip from the vellum as you did with the cardstock in the first instruction.  This strip will be used behind the cardstock to soften the candle light and to keep the candle from being seen through the holes in the scarecrow’s face.

4. Place the cardstock strip with the scarecrow’s face inside the jar.  You may wish to tape the two edges together.

5.  Place the vellum strip behind the cardstock in the jar.  You may wish to tape its two edges together.

6.  Make the lid.  Follow the instructions from my previous post. to make this lid, but use orange tissue paper and yarn instead of black. The materials for the lid are shown below.
