MATERIALS
– 5.5mm (I) hook
– Worsted weight yarn (4) in orange (I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Terracotta)
– Worsted weight yarn (4) in brown (I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Barley)
– Worsted weight yarn (4) in green (I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Fern)
– Tapestry needle for sewing and weaving in ends
– Scissors

– dc = double crochet

GUAGE
6 dc = 2 inches
2 dc rounds = 1 inch
SPECIAL NOTES
– The first stitch of each round is done in the same stitch as the beginning chain. (All rounds start in same stitch as beginning chain 2).
– Sizing is general so you may need to make adjustments based on different head sizes.
DIRECTIONS:
0 – 3 Months
Round 1: Using brown yarn, create a magic circle. Ch 2, 12 dc in magic circle. Join to first dc with a sl st. (12 dc)
Round 2: Change color to orange, ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join to first dc with sl st. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, 2 dc in next, repeat [dc, 2 dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc in round. (36 dc)
Rounds 4-10: Ch 2, dc aound, join with sl st to first dc in round. (36 dc)
Round 11: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join to first hdc in round with sl st, fasten off and weave in ends. (36 hdc)
*If this hat is for a newborn, you may want to remove a round or two of the 36 double crochet.
3 – 6 Months
Round 1: Using brown yarn, create a magic circle. Ch 2, 12 dc in magic circle. Join to first dc with a sl st. (12 dc)
Round 2: Change color to orange, ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join to first dc with sl st. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in first st, 2 dc in next, repeat [dc, 2 dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc in round. (36 dc)

Directions for Stem, leaf, and vine (all one piece):
*Always start first st in same st as chain
Round 1: Using brown yarn, magic circle, ch2, 6 dc in magic circle, join to first dc with sl st. (6 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join to first dc in round with sl st. (6 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join to first dc with sl st. (6 dc)
*Make sure the stem is right side out. Follow the below instructions to complete the leaf and vine.
- Switch yarn color to green (drop brown but leave long tail of brown for sewing on hat).
- Ch 2, 2 dc in next 3 sts (starting in same st as join). (6 dc)
- Ch 3, turn, htc, sl st in same st as htc, sl st in next st (at this point, the first leaf petal should be formed), ch 3, tc, sl st in same st as tc, sl st in next st (at this point, the second leaf petal should be formed), ch 2, 3 dc in first st, ch 3, turn, tc in first st, tc in next st, htc in next st, sl st in same st as htc, ch 1, turn, sc evenly around the entire petal, sl st in the fourth dc of the 6 dc from direction #2 (at this point, the third leaf petal should be formed), ch 3, htc, sc in next st, sl st in same st as sc, sl st in next st, sl st in first st of the stem (in the same st as the join from direction #1). The leaves are now complete. Do not fasten off. Proceed to the next direction to make the vine.
- Ch 25, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next 23 ch, sl st in same st as ch 25. (24 sc)
- Fasten off. Use the tail left from the brown yarn to sew the stem onto the hat with a tapestry needle.
