Field Goal Football Crochet Hat
Here is a fun football hat to wear while watching your favorite team! Lift the goal post earflaps up when your team kicks a field goal, scores, or does something awesome! My husband came up with this idea a while ago and I finally had a chance to make it. If you would like to make one, see below for my pattern.
MATERIALS
– 5.5mm (I) hook
– Worsted weight yarn in brown (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Chocolate)
– Worsted weight yarn in gold (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Gold)
– Worsted weight yarn in white (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in White)
– Tapestry needle for sewing and weaving in ends
– Scissors
ABBREVIATIONS
– ch = chain
– chs = chains
– hdc = half double crochet
– sc = single crochet
– slst = slip stitch
– st = stitch
– sts = stitches
GUAGE
7 hdc = 2 inches
5 hdc rounds = 2 inches
SPECIAL NOTES
– The first stitch of each round of the main hat is done in the same stitch as the beginning chain. (All rounds start in the same stitch as beginning chain 1).
– Make sure to join your rounds to the first hdc of the round (not the chain).
– The goal posts are made in continuous rounds.
– Start all hat sizes with brown yarn.

0-3 Months

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc dec, hdc in next 10 sts, hdc dec. (12 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, hdc dec, hdc in next 8 sts, hdc dec. (10 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, hdc dec, hdc in next 6 sts, hdc dec. (8 sts)

EDGING (Every size)
Using the yarn you left attached on the second earflap, sc evenly around the entire outline of the hat. Join to the first sc with a slst, fasten off, and weave in ends.
GOAL POSTS (Make 2)
The goal posts are made in continuous rounds (do not join with a slip stitch nor make a chain stitch at the beginning of each round – just add your next stitch to the first stitch of the previous round).
It helps to weave in the first loose end of the magic circle and turn right-side out after the first few rounds instead of waiting until the end to do it.
In all honesty, I did not mark my rounds nor keep track of how many rounds I had in total – I just continued until I had a length I liked.
0-3 Months/3-6 Months
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 5 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (5 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 8-8.5 inches (or however long you like). If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 20 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
6-12 Months
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 5 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (5 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 9 inches (or however long you like). If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 23 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
12-24 Months/Child Size (3-5 years)
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (6 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 10 inches (or however long you like). If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 25 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
Child Size (6-11 years)
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (6 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 10.75-11 inches (or however long you like). If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 27 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
Young Teen/Small Adult
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (6 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 11-11.5 inches (or however long you like). If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 28 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
Adult Size
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 7 hdc in magic ring.
*Rnd 2: hdc in each st around. (7 hdc)
*Repeat Round 2 until goal post measures 12 inches. If you are counting/marking rows, it should be about 30 rows.
At the end of the last row, add one sc, one slst and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat.
CROCHET LACES OPTION
Size 0-3 Months/3-6 Months
VERTICAL LACE (Make 1):
Row 1: Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 chs, 2 sc, slst in last ch, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing onto hat.
HORIZONTAL LACES (Make as many as will fit across the vertical lace):
Row 1: Ch 5, fasten off, leave tail for sewing onto hat.
Sizes 6-12 Months and up
VERTICAL LACE (Make 1):
Row 1: Ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 10 chs, 2 sc, slst in last ch, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing onto hat.
HORIZONTAL LACES (Make as many as will fit across the vertical lace):
Row 1: Ch 7, fasten off, leave tail for sewing onto hat.
EMBROIDERED LACES OPTION
Using white yarn and a tapestry needle, sew a vertical line on the front of your hat in between the white rows to represent the long lace of a football. You may want to double it to make it thicker. Then add the smaller horizontal laces going across the vertical lace using your needle and yarn.
HAT ASSEMBLY
- Sew a goal post on the inside of each ear flap. Be careful not to take your yellow yarn all the way through to the outside of the earflap since you don’t want it to show.
- If you crocheted your laces, sew the long (vertical) lace of the football to the front in the center of the hat.
- If you crocheted your laces, sew the short laces over the long lace, making sure to separate them evenly as you go.
Wear your hat while watching your team and raise the goal posts when they do something great!
