Butterfly Wreath Hanger Cover

I love hanging seasonal wreaths throughout the year on my front door.  I noticed that my wreath hanger is getting pretty old and looks a little shabby so I decided to crochet a stylish cover that slips right over it. I thought a cute butterfly would be perfect to place on the cover for use during spring and summer. Now, I’m not sure whether I like looking at my wreath or my hanger better!  If you are looking to add a little flair or update your wreath hanger, see below for my pattern.

Butterfly Wreath Hanger Cover

This wreath hanger cover is written to fit standard size wreath hangers (between ½ inch and 1 inch wide and 14 to 15 inches long).

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

The cover is about 17 inches long and 1 inch wide when it is off the hanger.

When on the hanger, the widest part (the distance across the top butterfly wings) is about 7 inches.

PATTERN NOTES

  • The cover is made in joined rounds of single crochet. Each round is completed with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round (do not count the slip stitch used to join each round as a stitch). You may wish to use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each row to keep track more easily.
  • The first stitch of each round is made in the very first stitch of the previous round (the same stitch in which the join/slip stitch and ch-1 was made).
  • Close the magic ring and weave in the loose end at the beginning since it gets very narrow as you work and it will be difficult to weave in at the end.
  • You can always add or delete rounds to make the cover longer or shorter to fit your wreath hanger.
  • When changing color, join the new color while completing the last sc (single crochet) of the previous color (by pulling through the new color when you have two loops on the hook in the previous color to complete the final sc).

DIRECTIONS:

Hanger Cover

*The cover is made in joined rounds. Join rounds with a slip stitch.

*Make sure to pull the magic ring closed and weave in/secure end at closure at the beginning. Weave in all ends/tails as you work since the cover is narrow and it would be difficult to weave in ends at the end.

*Use your 5.00 mm hook and worsted weight yarn in MC to begin.

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, work 6 sc in magic ring, join to first st with a slst, pull ring closed. (6 sc)

(Using your tapestry needle weave in the end to close the magic circle)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

Rounds 3–45: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

Round 46: Ch 1, sc in first 7 sts, begin sc in 8th st, joining/pulling through black yarn once you have two loops of MC on your hook to complete the sc (see pattern notes) join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

***Rounds 47 and 48 require color changes (MC and black yarn only) a few times throughout the rounds. A modified (more detailed) written version of each of these rounds is provided below the simplified (standard) version.

Round 47: Ch 1, sc in first st using black yarn, sc in next 2 sts using MC yarn, sc in next 2 sts using black yarn, sc in next 2 sts using MC yarn, sc in last st using black yarn, join to first st of round with a slst using black yarn. (8 sc)

(Below, Round 47 is written with more-detailed explanations of how to change colors during the round.)

***Round 47 (Detailed color-change instructions): Ch 1, begin sc in first st, joining/pulling through MC yarn once you have two loops of black yarn on your hook to complete the sc, sc in second st with MC yarn, begin sc in third st, joining/pulling through black yarn once you have two loops of MC yarn on your hook to complete the sc, sc in fourth st with black yarn, begin sc in fifth st, joining/pulling through MC yarn once you have two loops of black yarn on your hook to complete the sc, sc in sixth st with MC yarn, begin sc in seventh st, joining/pulling through black yarn once you have two loops of MC yarn on your hook to complete the sc, sc in last st with black yarn, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

Round 48: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts using black yarn, sc in next st using MC yarn, sc in next 3 sts using black yarn, sc in next st using MC yarn, sc in last st using black yarn, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

(Below, Round 48 is written with more-detailed explanations of how to change colors during the round.)

***Round 48 (Detailed color-change instructions): Ch 1, sc in first st with black yarn, begin sc in second st, joining/pulling through MC to complete the sc, begin sc in third st with MC yarn, joining/pulling through black yarn to complete the sc, sc in next 2 sts (the fourth and fifth sts) with black yarn, begin sc in sixth st, joining/pulling through MC yarn to complete the sc, begin sc in next st with MC yarn, joining/pulling through black yarn to complete the sc, sc in the last st with black yarn, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

*After completing Round 48, you should have black yarn on your hook which you will use to complete Rounds 49–64. Do not carry the MC yarn under your stitches in these rows (this is so you won’t be able to see it through the black stitches). Simply let the MC end hang loose and you can pull it up once you need it again during Round 65. Or, if you prefer, you could cut the MC yarn and join it again during Round 65.

Rounds 49–64: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

Round 65: Repeat Round 48.

Round 66: Repeat Round 47, but on last st, change color to MC by pulling through MC yarn to complete the sc, then slst to first st.

*After completing Round 66, you should have MC yarn on your hook to complete the remaining rounds. Weave in the black end of yarn after Round 66.

Rounds 67–82: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join to first st with a slst. (8 sc)

*Double check to see if you need to make the cover longer or shorter in order to get it to fit the height of your wreath hanger. If so, simply add or delete as many rounds as needed. Once you are satisfied with the length, fasten off and weave in the loose end.

*The main body of the wreath hanger cover is now complete. Follow the directions below to make the wings of the butterfly.

Top Butterfly Wing (Make 2)

* Use your WC yarn and size 5.00mm hook to make the top wing.

* Leave the tail from the starting slip knot of the wing loose for reference (do not weave it in until after you have outlined the wing in black

Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch across. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts. (7 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 6 sts, 2 sc in last st. (8 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 7 sts. (9 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 8 sts, 2 sc in last st. (10 sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, turn. 2 sc in first st, sc in next 9 sts. (11 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (11 sc)

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (11 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 10 sts, 2 sc in last st. (12 sc)

Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (12 sc)

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, slst in next st, sc in next 2 sts, dc in last 4 sts. (1 sc2tog, 5 sc, 1 slst, 4 dc; 11 total sts)

HINT: In Row 12, do not skip the slst from Row 11. The slst counts as a stitch so you will need to slst in the slst from Row 11 during Row 12.

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, dc in next 3 sts, slst in next 2 sts, sc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, slst in last st, fasten off and weave in loose ends (except for starting tail from original slip knot at the beginning of Row 1). (1 sc2tog, 4 dc, 3 slst, 1 sc, 1 hdc; 10 total sts)

*You now have the main WC section of the top wing complete. Follow the directions below to outline it in black.

Top Wing Edging

*Use your size 3.75mm hook and light weight black yarn to complete the edging of the wing.

In order to make the edging of the wing, you will sc evenly around its perimeter. Since it is lighter weight yarn and you are using a smaller hook, place 2 sc in each space around as you go. Make sure to slip stitch (and not sc) in the two slip stitches found in the middle of the two curves of the wing. See below for detailed instructions.

Left-Side Top Wing

Hold the wing so that the side with the two curves is on the left (with the larger curve on top) and Row 1 of the wing is on the right. The starting tail you left hang loose for reference should be on the top side of Row 1.  Attach your yarn to the first chain (where the reference tail starts) and ch 1. Sc in the same chain and then begin to sc evenly around the perimeter (placing 2 sc in each space) of the wing until you reach the two slip stitches in the middle of the two curves of the wing. Slip stitch in each of those, and then continue to sc evenly around the rest of the perimeter until you reach where you started. Place another sc in the same chain where you began and then slst to the first sc made in the chain. Fasten off, but leave a long tail for sewing the wing onto the wreath hanger cover. Weave in all other loose ends.

Right-Side Top Wing

*Since the right wing will have the opposite side face up from that of the left wing, you need to flip the wing over and sc around the perimeter on that side.

Hold the wing so that the side with the two curves is on the left (with the larger curve on the bottom) and Row 1 of the wing is on the right. The starting tail you left hang loose for reference should be on the bottom side of Row 1. Attach your yarn to the top side of Row 1 (the last chain of the starting chain which is on the opposite side of Row 1 from the tail you left hang loose for reference), and ch 1.

*You should now have completed both the top left wing and the top right wing. They should each have opposite sides facing up. Follow the directions below to make the bottom wings.

Bottom Butterfly Wing (Make 2)

* Use your WC yarn and size 5.00mm hook to make the bottom wing.

* Leave the tail from the starting slip knot of the wing loose for reference (do not weave it in until after you have outlined the wing in black.

Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch across. (7 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 6 sts. (8 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 7 sts, 2 sc in last st. (9 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 8 sts. (10 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in last st. (1 sc2tog, 9 sc; 10 total sts)

Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, hdc in next st, dc in next 4 sts, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. (3 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc, 1 sc2tog; 9 total sts)

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 3 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc2tog. (3 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 1 sc2tog; 8 total sts)

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc2tog, fasten off and weave in loose ends (except for starting tail from original slip knot at the beginning of Row 1). (2 sc2tog, 2 hdc, 2 dc; 6 total sts)

*You now have the main WC section of the bottom wing complete. Follow the directions below to outline it in black.

Bottom Wing Edging

*Use your size 3.75mm hook and sport weight black yarn to complete the edging of the wing.

In order to make the edging of the wing, you will sc evenly around its perimeter. Since it is lighter weight yarn and you are using a smaller hook, place 2 sc in each space around as you go.  See below for detailed instructions.

Left-Side Bottom Wing

Hold the wing so that Row 1 is on the right with the tail you left hang loose on the bottom side of Row 1. The curved part of the wing should go down and to the left. Attach your yarn to the top side of Row 1 (the last chain of the starting chain which is on the opposite side of Row 1 from the tail you left hang loose for reference), and ch 1. Sc in the same chain and then begin to sc evenly around the perimeter (placing 2 sc in each space) of the wing until you reach where you started. Place another sc in the same chain where you began and then slst to the first sc made in the chain. Fasten off, but leave a long tail for sewing the wing onto the wreath hanger cover. Weave in all other loose ends.

Right-Side Bottom Wing

*Since the right wing will have the opposite side face up from that of the left wing, you need to flip the wing over and sc around the perimeter on that side.

Hold the wing so that Row 1 is on the left with the tail you left hang loose on the bottom side of Row 1. The curved part of the wing should go down and to the right. Attach your yarn to the first chain (where the reference tail starts) and ch 1.

*You should now have completed both the bottom left wing and the bottom right wing. They should each have opposite sides facing up. Follow the directions below to make the (optional) veins on the wings and attach the wings to the wreath hanger cover.

Optional Wing Veins

Use your tapestry needle and light weight black yarn to stitch veins in whatever formation you choose on the front of each wing.

Attaching Wings to Cover

Use your tapestry needle and long tails you left with your black light-weight yarn to attach each wing to the black section (butterfly body) of the cover. See below for more detailed instructions.

  1. Figure out how/where you would like your wings to be positioned on the cover. You may want them to be straight up the sides of the black section (butterfly body) of the cover or you may want to angle them out slightly to create the appearance of a thicker butterfly body.
  2. Begin attaching the bottom wing on one side of the cover first, since you want the bottom wing to appear slightly underneath the top wing. Make sure you only go through the front layer of the cover. Placing the cover on the wreath hanger before you start may help with the wing positioning and ensuring that you only go through the front of the cover. You may not want to fasten off/secure your yarn until you get all of the wings on the cover and double check that you like their positioning.
  3. Attach the top wing on the same side in the same fashion as you did the bottom wing.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the cover.
  5. Once you are happy with the positioning of the wings, fasten off and weave in/knot your ends to make sure the wings are securely attached.

Antenna (Make 2)

*Use your black worsted weight yarn and size 5.00mm hook.

Ch 3, fasten off, leave a long tail for attaching onto the cover. Use your beginning tail to make a large knot over the slip knot on the chain to create the top end of the antenna.

Use the long tail you left and your tapestry needle to attach and secure the antenna in place on the top of the black section of the cover.

Once you have secured all loose ends, your wreath cover is now ready to use!
