Edging of Friendly Ghost

*Use a 2.00 mm hook to work the edging.

  1. After completing the final decrease stitch (sc2tog) of Row 15, switch to a 2.00 mm hook and pick up the yarn on the 2.00 mm hook where you left off.
  2. Follow the pattern below to sc evenly around the perimeter (outside of the ghost) to give it a finished/polished look.

With your yarn on the new (2.00mm) hook after completing the final sc2tog of Row 15, ch 1, turn work, sc in next 13 sts across Row 15 (working toward the tail of the ghost), work 2 sc in the space at the tip of the tail and then continue to sc evenly around the other side of the tail (you should have about 5 sc on other side), sc evenly up toward the arm (you should have about 4 sc in the curve from the tail to the bottom of the right arm), sc evenly around the right arm (you should have about 13 sc around the right arm), sc evenly up toward the top of the head (you should have about 8 sc on right side of head before you get to the very top space, working the 1st sc of the group in the first st of Row 7 of the body), work 2 sc in the very top space of head, sc evenly down the left side of the head (you should have about 8 sc on left side of head, working last sc in last st of Row 7 of the body), sc evenly around the left arm (you should have about 13 sc around the left arm), sc in side of body at Row 10 and then continue to sc down the left side of body until you reach the bottom where you started the edging (you should have 8 sc down the left side including the first sc of the group made in the side of Row 10), slst in first sc of edging, fasten off and neatly weave in all loose ends on back of work. (76 sc)

***Once you are finished weaving in the loose ends, follow the directions below to add the eyes of the ghost.

Eyes of Friendly Ghost

Use your tapestry needle and a strand of black yarn to stitch each eye onto the ghost. Each eye is simply two small vertical stitches placed directly beside each other.

Starting with the left eye, use your tapestry needle to draw up the black yarn from the back of the work to the front in between Rows 3 and 4 of the body, about one stitch in from the left side. Then, use your tapestry needle to pull the black yarn back down through the work right above where you pulled the yarn through to the front to make a vertical stitch that is almost the length of a single crochet stitch. Bring the yarn back up through the front of the work at about the same place as you did to start the first vertical stitch and then take it back down through at about the same place as you did to finish the vertical stitch. This should make the eye slightly thicker/bigger. Once you are satisfied with your left eye placement/stitches, neatly secure and weave in the two ends of your black strand of yarn on the back of the work, behind the left eye.

To make the right eye, use your tapestry needle to draw up another strand of black yarn from the back of the work to the front in between Rows 3 and 4 of the body, about one stitch in from the right side. Then, use your tapestry needle to pull the black yarn back down through the work right above where you pulled the yarn through to the front to make a vertical stitch that is almost the length of a single crochet stitch. Bring the yarn back up through the front of the work at about the same place as you did to start the vertical stitch and then take it back down through at about the same place you did to finish the first vertical stitch. This should make the eye slightly thicker/bigger. Once you are satisfied with your right eye placement/stitches, neatly secure and weave in the two ends of your black strand of yarn on the back of the work, behind the right eye.

***Once you finish weaving in all loose ends, your friendly ghost button-on appliqué is ready to be placed on a ½-inch black button.

TIP: Press the appliqué with an iron using a press cloth for protection to help it lay flat and keep its shape.
